Ice Hotels

The method repeats rather than the building. River ice is harvested, snow is sprayed over frames to form vaults, and the same arch section carries the corridors year after year. Beds sit on ice blocks, dressed with reindeer hides, and the temperature inside holds at the same level throughout.

The art suites never repeat. Each is carved by a different artist to a different design and stands for one winter before it melts back into the river, and next winter brings other people and other rooms. Nothing that was cut into the walls in a previous season survives to be seen again.

Ice cannot be stored, so the material forces the cycle. Everything made in autumn is gone by summer, which means the hotel has to be built from nothing each year, and there is no reason to copy last year's rooms when doing it.

Construction repeats and the rooms do not. Snow is packed over forms to make vaults, the vaults carry the same profile from year to year, and the corridors between them are cut to a width that people can walk in coats. Doors are hides or curtains rather than panels.

Carved walls are set to a theme chosen for that season, so the figures cut into the snow in one winter have nothing to do with those cut the winter before. Chapels, bars and sleeping rooms are all made new, and none of them is rebuilt from a stored drawing.

The village stands in Lainio, in Kittilä, where snow is dependable for part of the year and gone for the rest. Working to a fresh theme each season is a way of making that yearly rebuild into the point rather than a cost.

The site repeats, and the working method with it. The hotel goes up in the same place beside the river every winter, snow and ice are taken from nearby, and the plan keeps a corridor with sleeping rooms along it and a bar at one end. Beds rest on ice throughout.

The carving never repeats. Sculptors arrive before the season and cut new walls, new furniture and new figures, and what they make lasts until the thaw takes it. Alta itself is single as well: a valley of river and canyon where the light in midwinter is its own.

Building in snow only works while the cold holds, so the hotel is seasonal by necessity and disappears when the river runs again. Rebuilding from scratch each winter also means the carvers start with an empty plan every time.

Snow construction repeats from one winter to the next. Vaults are formed over frames, corridors run at a walking width, and sleeping places are cut into the same kind of alcove each year. The temperature inside stays near freezing whatever the weather does outside, so the fabric behaves predictably.

The carved rooms are made new every winter and then let go. Kirkenes supplies the other single thing: a fjord almost at the Russian border, where the water stays open and the road ends not far beyond the town. That setting cannot be reproduced elsewhere.

The Barents coast gives a long cold season, which is what makes a snow building practicable at all. The hotel has worked to that calendar since 2006, putting the structure up when the cold arrives and letting it go when it leaves.
